What is the best means of self-defense for a young woman?

I am a 20 year old college student and I am about to be moving from a middle class suburb to a lower income part of the city. I will be walking and taking public transportation. Beside taking a self-defense class, should I keep anything with me to protect myself? Any other safety tips or advice is welcome as well :) Thanks!

Where will you be. I’d suggest a snubnose 357 but most big cities would rather see you raped and killed than defend yourself. Check local laws, maybe pepperspray. If you get that get the stuff made to ward off grisly bears.

Don’t ever walk with earphones on, because you want to be aware of everything going on around you. I guess pepper spray couldn’t hurt.

Taking a self defense class is a great start! I’m 21 and I ALWAYS carry mace. I keep it with my keys attached to a clip that’s always on my right hip belt loop. That’s the cheapest and easiest way to go. If you feel the need to, don’t be afraid to take up a basic hand gun course either. It’s a good base for getting your concealed to carry if and when you decide to purchase a handgun. ALWAYS keep your cell phone easy to get to (Like your mace/pepper spray) and always make sure it’s charged. Hope this helps!

The self defense class is a great start and there are products that you should carry with you since these products will help to immobilize an attacker and allow you time to get away and seek help. Pepper spray is a good choice since it takes the attacker off guard and literally stuns him with a blast of intensely hot pepper liquid. Also, a pocket alarm is crucial. A pocket alarm will emit an ear piercing alarm that will be heard for a long distance. The piercing shrill of the alarm can take the attacker off guard also since the noise hurts the ears. Protecting yourself from all angles is key! Check out this site for great self defense products…
